Udupi, June 09: Jayashreekrishna Parisara Premi Samiti during its annual study visit, inspected areas affected by sea erosion at Trasi-Maravanthe Beach in Udupi district on 9th June 2025.
The committee visited the Koderi port area in Kirimanjeshwara village, Byndoor taluk, where the sea and river banks meet. They held discussions with locals and gathered information regarding the issues of sea and riverbank erosion.
Locals informed the team that Koderi is a confluence area of the Edamavina Hole (river) and the sea, where there is also a small fishing port used by residents. This area is affected by severe sea erosion.
Though the sea was once over 500 meters away from the shore, it now comes as close as 200 meters or less in some parts. Every year, the sea continues to encroach upon the coast. Many parts of the shoreline still lack proper protective walls. Despite several contracts being issued, construction of protective rock barriers has only taken place in limited areas, explained local fisherman Ramesh Kharvi to the committee. He also noted that the riverbanks of Edamavina Hole, which runs parallel to the sea for a long distance, are experiencing riverbank erosion.
The team conducted a thorough inspection of the environment from afternoon till evening. The committee’s founder, Jayakrishna A. Shetty, assured the local people that they would urge the government to take awareness and action on this issue.
